Sustainability is a popular topic in construction, but as with any worthy goal, actions speak louder than words. To that end, SOPREMA Canada has launched a new Sustainability Development campaign designed to drive awareness and solutions to this timely issue.
“From manufacturers to architects and from installers to governments, we all share the same planet. Therefore, we are responsible for doing everything we can to minimize the environmental and health impact of our activities,” the company states on its Sustainability Development campaign website.
There are compelling arguments for pursuing sustainability in construction. According to SOPREMA’s literature, building materials generate upwards of 50% of solid waste and account for 12% of the world’s drinking water consumption. Moreover, the built environment takes 36% of the globe’s energy consumption and produces 40% of the total global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
“Architects and installers play a decisive role in the building and construction industry by improving building design and construction methods,” SOPREMA notes, adding, “Lowering energy consumption in buildings is one of the most important ways to reduce the overall human impact on the environment and global warming.”
Sparking change
SOPREMA’s Sustainability Development campaign is a natural next step in the company’s eco-forward mission. It builds upon the adoption of its first Sustainable Development (SD) policy in January 2019, which introduced measures across its operations that focus on improving sustainability throughout the construction sector.
This latest initiative picks up on those measures by turning a spotlight on the impacts of buildings on living environments, and the need for cleaner and more sustainable practices. Part of the campaign includes the company’s Sustainable Solutions Guide policy which was written to help construction professionals embed sustainability into projects concerning the design, construction, and renovation of buildings and infrastructure. Over and above detailing the SOPREMA products and systems that promote eco-friendly construction, the guide covers 18 sustainable development issues and challenges across four key themes, including Nature, Environmental Quality, Quality of Life and Sustainability.
“As a manufacturer of building products, it is essential for SOPREMA to act by promoting sustainable development and to contribute to the future of the current and successive generations,” the company notes.
The campaign also includes multi-media resources, including a compelling campaign video that conveys the urgent need for eco-forward practices and asks: “How can we build a better future?” Another video also concretely addresses their global sustainability approach based on the life cycle.
As populations grow and housing needs evolve, the time is now to make serious inroads in sustainable building strategies. SOPREMA’s Sustainability Development campaign offers a look at what that means for industry stakeholders and support to begin taking action.
